Peter I

I hide footprints in the sand.

Wind whistles through the reeds
But I can only hear my heartbeat.

It feels so loud the earth must shake
But no one else can hear.

Today was supposed to be better.
It was supposed to get easier.

Ghosts swirl all around me.
They haunt even when set free.

This Friday Flash Fiction 55 courtesy of the letter R and the number zero (is that a number?) and is dedicated to Jake, who couldn't be here today.

If you want to participate, check out G-Man's ever-growing murder of bloggers (kind of like a flock of geese, only more - I don't know - diabolical).

  1. This reminds me of Coleridge's Rime of the ancient mariner!

    Great job!

  3. Wow...that's beautiful. Truly. So little words, but says so, so much.

My 55 is now posted. It's not fiction per sé but it's done. Come by if you get a chance. Happy Friday.

  6. Now that is strange. We read it out loud and the room seemed filled with ghosts. Dragons hate ghosts.

    We have posted

  7. What a terrific 55. I think no matter what the day is or what the situation is on any given day there is always a reminder there waiting for us. I just think somedays the reminder is a pleasant one and on other days well not so much. Those are our ghosts just letting us know they are with us. My 55 is up

  10. I can feel a seabreeze reading this...and it's a little eerie but extremely well written. I read your explanation below, too...cool! I like that you'll keep going with this.

As for the monkey, yes, Coby has sent me all sorts of cryptic messages wanting me to hand over the monkey or else... He sounds serious. E-mail me.
